Video: Tortellini Casserole

Crockpot Tortellini Ingredient List

Crock Pot Tortellini

  • 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of precooked ground meat (I used ground beef; pre-cooked, drained & frozen)
  • 1 can chicken broth
  • 1 jar spaghetti sauce
  • 1 can Italian tomatoes
  • 1 bag frozen tortellini (I used cheese tortellini, any sort would work)
  • 1 can evaporated milk
  • 2 cups shredded Italian cheeses
  • 1 tablespoon dried basil (optional but adds more flavor)
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic (or according to your own taste)

Step-by-Step Directions (if you don't care for videos)

  1. Spray or butter your crock pot insert.  I don't recommend the option of slow cooker liners for this or any tomato based recipe.  The acid in tomatoes can interact with plastic and cause them to deteriorate.  So, in my personal opinion, this isn't someplace to use the liners.
  2. Toss everything in the slow cooker insert and stir well.
  3. Cover and cook for 4 to 6 hours

Serving Suggestions

All that's left to do is dish this deliciousness up!  Maybe add a side salad and garlic bread.  You'll be all set for any night of the week!  Enjoy :)

Crockpot Sausage and Pepper Dinner

crock-pot-sausage-dinner

This recipe is one of the easiest, tastiest crockpot sausage dinners ever made in this kitchen!

Crockpot Sausage Dinner

Granted, it's pretty close to the One-Pot Sausage Dinner from a few months back, but it's got enough of its own flavors to warrant a recipe.  This crock pot sausage and pepper dinner is full of all sorts of yumminess!  Lots of peppers and TONS of garlic tosses it right over the top for yumminess!

It takes just a few minutes too!  It's a true "dump-and-go" dinner.  Another beautiful thing...it's tasty and healthy.  If you want to make it even healthier you can easily purchase organic veggies and turkey sausage.

There's also no-salt chicken stock readily available.  You can find it in most any grocery store or big-box store.  If you'd like to take a step even further into healthy, you can substitute broth.  Even organic broth.  That's about as healthy as you can get unless you make your own.  Which that's possible too and on my to-do list.

Slow Cooker Sausage Directions

All you have to do is do a little washing and slicing, toss everything in and let it cook while you get on with your day.  If you'd like, you can double the recipe.  As is, it feeds 3 to 4 people.  Double, of course, about twice that.  I cooked double, fed a couple other folks and we had leftovers another night.

If you decide to double the recipe, do layers.  I mean half the potatoes, half the sausage, etc.  It will help it cook more evenly.

Layer the potatoes on the bottom, then layer the sausage slices...

Crock Pot Sausage

Layer on the squash, then the peppers...

Smoked Sausage Dinner

This recipe was doubled.  This is the second layer and why this large of a crock pot is so full.

Pour on the broth/stock...

Slow Cooker Sausage

Cover and cook on low for 5 to 7 hours.

Cook Time Notes

Your cook time will probably vary from mine a bit.  Crockpot cooking depends on a lot of things.

  • The size of the batch you make (single or double)
  • The thickness of your vegetables (potatoes here)
  • How full you fill your crock pot
  • The brand, shape and fickleness of your own slow cooker

And on those potatoes...this is how I sliced mine.  Scrubbed, skins on and between 1/4 and 1/2 and inch.  There was no science involved here.  I just sliced them thin.

Sliced Potatoes for Crock Pot Sausage Dinner

We had company so I needed to make a double batch.  My cook time for both a double batch and thin-sliced potatoes was almost 7 hours.  The results were creamy, fall-apart delicious.

So... when the potatoes are tender, supper's ready.  Just add salt and pepper to taste and enjoy!

Freezer Meal Notes

You can make this a freezer meal if you'd like.  The vegetables won't have the same texture after they are frozen, but it's still a delicious meal.

To turn this into a freezer meal just dump everything in, label and freeze.  You can freeze it with or without the chicken broth/stock right in the bag.

Which crock-pot works best?

This recipe was made in my handy-dandy tried and true 7-quart crock pot.  You can't get much more standard or dependable that this guy.  Mine's been around a long time and worked pretty hard on a weekly basis.

If you are looking for a good, dependable, cheap slow cooker...this one's for you.  No frills and no bells or whistles.  It just cooks.

Crock Pot Chicken Pot Pie! Find this & more yumminess @ https://www.slowcookerkitchen.comCrock Pot Chicken Pot Pie

Oh, my... chicken pot pie.  This stuff is delicious!  If you love chicken pot pie from KFC or the frozen Marie Calendars...You'll LOVE this stuff.  Our latest crock pot chicken pot pie creation has NO biscuits.

Don't get me wrong...I love the classic chicken pot pie made with biscuits.  I've got recipes to make it in the slow cooker and in my cast iron both...BUT I wanted a change.

AND I was cruising the aisles at the grocery looking for ideas...or inspiration...whatever tag you want to put on it.  I found these dumplings.

Crock Pot Chicken Pot Pie Dumplings

They may not look like much in the package but I figured the frozen egg noodles had worked out so well with the Crock Pot Beef & Noodles; it was worth a shot.

Boy, oh boy and I glad I tried it!  This stuff rocks!  When I was a kid I LOVED the frozen chicken pot pies.  I was always excited when I could talk my Mama into buying me one.  As an adult, I tried them again.  Not that I can't make stuff from scratch or semi-scratch but life gets in your way sometimes and emergency meals are a Godsend at times.

Ugh.  I was so disappointed.  Either my taste buds had matured or quality had gone way downhill.  Knowing the way things work, probably a little of both.

So then I found the Marie Calendar's (yeah, I'm talking several years ago, not recently) and thought "score"!  Yep, except it took like 6 if them to feed my family.  Delicious but way too steep for the budget.  So I started making this Skillet Chicken Pot Pie.  It's delicious and goes together in a flash but it still wasn't the same.

So Here's My Happy Dance (Chicken Pot Pie Video)

Did I say I'm doing a happy dance?  You betcha!  'Cause now I've found a way to make ANY kind of creamy, cheesy, deliciously yummy pot pie I want...anytime!!!

These dumplings are the key.  And like I said before, they don't look like much in the package but boy, oh boy they are yummy once you cook 'em :)

Key Notes on Dumplings

Slow Cooker Chicken Pot Pie

Two things about these dumplings.  This is just to save you time and frustration, 'cause it took me a couple rounds to get this recipe right.  Hopefully, this will help you not become frustrated and have to toss out dinner.

  1. Check your dumplings about 6 hours in.  If they are doughy, cook longer.  Until you know how your crock pot is going to cook this dish, it'll be a bit of an experiment.

Why do you need to check your dumplings so often the first time you make this dish?

All crock pots cook differently.  The time gap (aka 6 to 8 hours) means it all depends on your crockpot.  Your crock pot isn't going to cook at the same speed mine does.  They vary drastically with age and brand.  Heck, I've got two of the same model and they don't cook at the same speed.  It's just the nature of the beast.

2. Let them completely thaw before you attempt to separate and use them.  For the love of your own sanity, please listen to me on this one.  They do NOT come apart even partially frozen.  Learn from my epic fail on this one, please...

Chicken Pot Pie

Next time, I'll be adding more meat.  I just happened to have 2 chicken breasts in the freezer when I did 14 Freezer Meals in  less than 1 Hour and used them.  The recipe as pictured shows two chicken breasts, the recipe as written calls for 3 to 4.  That's the only change I'd make...

Oh, one last note.  This WAS a freezer meal.  And for some items, that means they separate.  This sauce separated.  It does NOT affect the taste or the end results.  It recombines beautifully, but the prep pictures look a bit weird in places.  As long as you can get past that little oddity, you'll get one of the yummiest crock pot chicken pot pies I've ever eaten :)

Give this recipe a shot, give us a shout out on the Facebook page and tell us how it worked for you.  'Cause it's just another one of those yummy recipes that'll totally rock your crock ;)

It's freezer friendly before and after cooking too.  Or if time is a factor, you can even cook it overnight.

Most roasts are huge.  And the grocery store price increases exponentially as the cut of the meat goes down.  I get that the butcher has to cut more, the extra packaging, etc...I get it.  But just because that huge cut of meat looks intimidating, don't pass that baby up!

You can season it, cook it...even brown it, in just a few minutes.  Pop that lid on the top and walk away or go to bed, whichever...let it cool and package it into freezer bags for excellent quick and easy weeknight meals.Pork Roast Crock Pot Recipes! Whatever you do, just rock that crock :)

Basic 4-Ingredient Crock Pot Pork Roast

Crock pot pulled pork is an excellent standby recipe.  When most folks here "pulled pork" they think sandwiches.  And those are great!  BUT did you know there's a whole host of things you can make with pulled pork?

Pretty much anything you can make with chicken breast, you can substitute pulled pork.  AND though you can make pulled pork in the smoker or in the oven pretty easy...neither is as juicy as crock pot pulled pork.  And you'll only need 4 ingredients.  Then you can turn this versatile yumminess into any sort of dish you want :)

Pork Roast Slow Cooker Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 to 4-pound pork roast
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke (optional)

I recommend cooking this for 7 to 10 hours.  That varies depending on how hot and fast your crock pot cooks (the cook times vary LOTS).  But even if you goof and cook it too long, you'll still come up with something delicious.  I thought I was going to be gone for about 8 hours the other day so I tossed mine in...

pulled pork crock pot

Then life happened and I was gone 12 hours.  When I saw my roast I literally groaned.

pulled pork crock pot recipe

I groaned loud enough my dog thought she was in trouble for a moment :)

I figured what did I have to loose.  So I cooled it a bit then shredded the meat.

No worries this time!  I was lucky.  It turned out just fine.  It actually tasted a lot like the recipes when you pre-brown the meat a bit.  Just a little extra flavor.  No issues with hard edges or anything.  Thank goodness I followed the verbiage at the beginning of my own recipes where I say "spray, butter or oil..".  It would have been an epic mess if I hadn't.

Dinner Ideas Using Crock Pot Pork Roast!

These simple pulled pork crock pot recipes can be a real life saver.  Any & all of them can be made just like they are listed OR you can use the basic recipe shown right above.  Once you freeze it in portions you can whip up dinner in a flash.  After looking up these yummy recipes I can tell you one sure thing... pulled pork isn't just for sandwiches :)

Easy Crock Pot Barbecue Pork Roast Sandwiches by Slow Cooker Kitchen

Crockpot Barbecue Pork

These pulled pork sandwiches are a quick and easy classic.  Just a few ingredients and 5 minutes and you'll be rockin' your crock (pot)!

 Starting With Pre-Cooked Meats:

First, if you start off with the pre-made pork from the recipe linked above, you'll just need to add your choice of barbecue sauce and hot sauce.  The hot sauce is totally optional but we like the flavor.  You'll need about 2 to 3 times the amount of meat in relation to the amount of sauce.

With this recipe, I used about 3 cups of pulled pork tenderloin, 1 1/2 cups Jack Daniels Barbecue Sauce and 2 teaspoons Louisiana Hot Sauce.

Crockpot Barbecue Pork

Then, you simply toss everything in the (oiled) crockpot, stir, cover and cook on low 3 to 4 hours.

Starting With Raw Chunk of Meat:

Also, if you're starting with a raw chunk of meat, no worries.  Cause it's still super simple. You're just combining two recipes.

You will need:

  • 2 1/2 to 4-pound pork roast or loin
  • 1 packet onion soup mix
  • 1/4 cup steak sauce
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke (optional)
  • 1 large bottle barbecue sauce of your choice
  • 1 tablespoon Louisiana Hot Sauce (optional)

pulled pork crock pot recipe

Just oil the crock, lay in the roast and pour and sprinkle steak sauce, liquid smoke & soup mix over the top.

Now cover and cook it all day (5 to 8 hours on low).

You'll need to let the meat cool just a bit before you pull it.  You can use a couple forks to get it on a platter.  Then it usually takes 5 to 15 minutes to cool.

Next, pull the meat apart with forks.  Then drain the fat out of the crockpot and toss the meat back in.

Lastly, add the barbecue sauce and hot sauce.  Stir well and cover.  Keep on warm 'til you're ready to eat.

This is What You'll Get Either Way

Pretty much, either way you go with this recipe, it's going to turn out looking a lot like this.

Easy Crockpot Pulled Pork

NOW you can toss it on buns, add pickles and dinner is all done!  Me personally I LOVE dill pickles with barbecue.  I'm told not everyone does..if that's you, of course, leave them off.  Some folks like cheeses, others don't.  Maybe it depends on the barbecue sauce.  That's my option personally.  Anyways, you'll have to experiment with that one and see what you think.

If you used option #2 and opted for using a skillet, you'll need a second skillet for the onions.

Slow Cooker Pork Roast Final Thoughts!

This easy crockpot pulled pork is proof positive that yummy does NOT equal complicated.  Most of these recipes can be tossed together in a matter of minutes.  Even IF you start from scratch instead of with the pre-made crock pot pork roast recipe, you're still only looking at 5 to 6 ingredients.

You can make all these recipes with any sort of pork roast or loin.  The tenderloins tend to have less fat but are also more expensive.  If you go with a pork shoulder or roast you can cook it then drain off most of the fat.  So no worries.  It works either way.

That's the end of our pork roast slow cooker recipe lineup.  We hope you enjoyed it and it will help make your life a bit easier.

A Full Dinner Couldn't Be Easier

Barbecue chicken just screams summer!  And these crock pot BBQ chicken thighs not only take just 5 to 7 minutes to prep, they only take 6 ingredients too.  And that's the whole dinner, veggies and all :)

Wash your veggies, toss everything in the slow cooker in layers and walk away!  Well, you'd best put the lid on and turn on the crockpot too, but really that's it!  There is no work before prep work nor any extra steps before supper.  Walk in, dish it up and serve.  Dinner's all in one pot!

Most grocery stores have these pre-seasoned chicken thighs.  They have legs too, but this recipe is about chicken thighs.  So we'll focus on those.  I've never actually bought them before this recipe.  But I wanted chicken and they were running a sale on the pre-seasoned thighs.

      Slow Cooker Barbecue Chicken

I guess someone in the meat department got happy with the shaker.  Every piece of chicken in the department was seasoned.  I kid you not.  And there was a LOT of chicken too.  So preseasoned bbq chicken thighs for the crock pot it was.

You Can Make Your Own BBQ Rub too!

If you'd rather make your own rub, that's completely cool.  I've done it several times in the past.  I've just never written it down.  This video by Badass BBQ Rub is an awesome choice.

I've used this recipe a couple times before.  It's yummy!

Bone-In Chicken With the Skin is Your Best Bet Most Times
      barbecue crockpot chicken thighs

Chicken's an awesome crockpot meat.  BUT a key that most folks don't know...and I sure didn't a few years ago...is that boneless, skinless chicken anything is really hard to keep juicy in the crockpot.  The bone and the skin both help the chicken remain very tender and juicy.  That leads to yummy results and satisfied bellies.  So it's a great choice.

If you're a busy person and use the slow cooker to help you out there, your best bet it most likely bone-in chicken with the skin.  If you don't like the skin or don't eat it for dietary reasons, just pull it off before you eat it.  There's enough of this sauce that makes it to the skin for it to still be delish!

Making up a huge batch of this crockpot chili doesn't take long at all to toss together.  THEN you can freeze it and defrost it as needed.

Or you can make up a batch and do a "week of crock pot chili" theme.  I don't mean eat chili every night.  Ick.  That'd sure get old.

I mean how about something like what's listed in the table of contents above?  A bowl of chili one night, chili-cheese dogs another, bacon chili cheeseburgers another, you get me.

Once you have your crockpot chili made and waiting for you in the freezer or fridge… every single one of these recipes takes less than 15 minutes to toss together.

Both the casseroles taste a little better if you can let them cook a bit longer than that but 15 minutes will work in a pinchf. It's a great time saver.  That's the point.

Also, if you're interested in saving time you can check out our recipe for a master meat mix  and our ground beef crock pot recipes.  Both are excellent time savers and will make your life much easier.

Quick & Easy Crockpot Chilieasy crockpot chili

      Crockpot Chili Ingredients

      • Ground beef
      • Ground sausage or pork
      • Onion
      • Garlic
      • Sweet peppers
      • Red kidney beans
      • Chili ready tomatoes
      • Tomato sauce
      • Chili seasoning: Either 2 packets or 4 tablespoons homemade chili seasoning mix
      Make-Ahead Ground Beef

Those first 4 ingredients that are listed up above...those are what we use in our master meat mix. You can check out our afternoon of cooking with that right here.

So if you find a sale on ground beef, don’t be afraid to buy a bunch.  You can use the master meat mix recipe, cook up tons of it and freeze it in batches for later use.

      Sneak in Those Veggies!

You can also add bell peppers and celery to that "master mix" if you’d like.  This works great to sneak in more veggies for picky eaters.

It’s really good and very versatile either way.  But I digress.  Here we go with the chili...

      Step-by-Step Crockpot Chili Directions

      Step #1: Chop It!

First, you’ll need to dice up your onions, and garlic... if you are using whole garlic instead of the minced version. I try to find onions that are considered “sweet” because we don’t care for the really hot ones.

I usually diced my onions rather small and my peppers more “medium”.  That’s just my preference.  You dice yours up however you want.

If you’re short on time you can even slice them or toss them in the food processor.  Whatever works best for you.

homemade crock pot chiliAlso, I purchased minced, “jarred” garlic this round.  I really love whole garlic, but I was completely out.

Everyone else must have been too, because what the grocery had very little left and it looked pretty gross.  So, I opted for the minced kind this round.

      Step #2: Fry It!

Now!  Toss the meats, diced onions and garlic in a greased, sprayed or non-stick skillet. Cover it up and fry over medium-low heat.  While that’s cooking… and beginning to smell amazing I might add…get to work on those peppers.slow cooker chili recipes

And if you're a multi-tasker, why not make a couple ground beef slow cooker recipes at the same time? I mean I TRY to do freezer cooking a LOT. But time is what it is and there isn't always time.

So this round I made slow cooker stuffed peppers and this crock pot chili at the same time during this round of cooking.  I didn’t chop up every piece of my peppers, I used the tops for the chili and left the bottoms for the stuffed peppers.

But if you’re only going for making chili, you’ll need to wash them and clean out the seeds and dice them up.  Like I said while I was talking about dicing up the onions, you don’t have to dice them itty-bitty.  I usually don’t.

I like the peppers to be diced larger, but that’s just my preference.  It really doesn’t matter from a cooking perspective because you’re going to cook it for a long time.

      Step #3: Crock It!

By the time you get the peppers cleaned and chopped your meat will probably need to be tended. If you want smaller chunks of meat, chop it up a bit.

So go ahead and tend to the meats and then proceed on to the slow cooker insert and canned goods.slow cooker chili

And just a side note...I almost always spray, oil or butter my crockpot insert. The slow cooker liners work great for some foods.  But from my experience, no plastic works well with the acidity in tomatoes.

Since I don’t want any excess grease or butter in my crockpot chili, I’m opting to spray the insert.  Some folks don’t use spray and that’s cool.  I do.  If you use an oil or butter, just use a very thin layer or you’ll have oily floaties in your chili later.

Anyways, it's time to open the tomatoes, tomato sauce, and canned beans. Just dump them in the crockpot.  Don’t drain them.  This chili doesn’t call for any water, the juices from the cans are the only liquid in this recipe.

Toss in the peppers and the chili seasoning. If you don’t like using the pre-packaged stuff or if you are out our homemade chili seasoning goes together in a flash.

      Step #4: Cook It!

Drain the grease off the meat and pat it dry if you want to get rid of most of the grease. Dump the meat mixture in the crockpot with the rest of the ingredients and stir well.easy chili recipe

I’m going to backtrack on my words a bit here.  You might WANT to add just a bit of water.  And by a bit, I mean not a lot at all, possibly a half to three-fourths a cup.

Why?  Because the amount of water in canned beans and tomatoes is going to vary.  Unless you use the exact brands I do, your fluid content isn’t going to be the same.

If you’re going to use your crockpot chili for a soup, great.  Make it as soupy as you'd like.  But if you’re planning to use it for any of the recipes listed below.  Sorta like a topping, you’ll want it thicker.  It’s a bit of a judgment call, you can always add more water later.

The last step is easy.  Well, the whole recipe is pretty easy but this is the last step... Just cover and cook.

You can cook it on low for 8 to 10 hours.  I’ve cooked it for upwards of 12 hours and it was great.  The longer, the better with this recipe.

And, like lots of crockpot soups and stews, it’s even better the next day :)

      Homemade Chili Seasoning

If you don’t like using pre-made packets of seasoning or if you want to save some money OR if you are just plain OUT you can make your own, from scratch!  It’s super easy.

It takes about 5 minutes and you can store it just like any other spice for several months.homemade chili seasoning

There are lots of homemade chili seasoning recipes out there.  They vary because tastes vary.

Some like it hot, some like it mild.  Some like it thick, some like it with more liquid.  That’s all a matter of taste.

This chili seasoning recipe is mild but flavorful.  The smoked paprika gives it an amazing flavor.  I would never have expected one spice to make that much difference.  It really does!

Once you gather up the spices you need you just mix them together and store them in an airtight canister.

You can put them through a blender or food processor if you’d like, it will make them mix better and look more like what comes out of the packets.  That’s completely optional.  It doesn’t affect the taste.

      Chili Seasoning Ingredients
      • 2/3 cup flour or 3 tablespoons cornstarch
      • 1 to 2 cups chili powder (this part totally depends on how hot you like it and how much pepper you intend to use)
      • 1 cup dehydrated onions
      • 2 to 3 teaspoons cumin
      • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Allspice (optional but awesome)
      • 1 to 2 tablespoons red pepper flakes
      • 1/3 cup dried parsley
      • 1/4 cup garlic powder
      • 2 tablespoons onion powder
      • 1 to 2 tablespoons smoked paprika (if you can find smoked, get it...it is awesome!)
      • 1 to 2 tablespoons oregano

If you can’t find smoked paprika, you can just use regular too.  But if you have the option, give the smoked a shot.  It’s really amazing!

Deliciously Yummy AND Easy Crockpot Chili Recipes

NOW that you’ve got that yummy crock pot chili made, what do you do with it?  My answer is ALL SORTS OF DELICIOUSNESS :)

Here are just a few of our ideas.  We’ve eaten some, other ideas have been offered by friends, family, and readers.

If you have one to add, let us know!  Either contact us via email or comment below!  We’d love to share your ideas too!

Just a Bowl Good 'Ole Chili with Cheddar & Sour Cream

Eat this yumminess right out of the crockpot!  Top it with sour cream, guacamole or lots of gooey cheddar cheese!  Add some crackers or make up a batch of our crockpot cornbread and serve it on the side.  Heck, ladle some over the top of that cornbread and eat it that way.  YUM :)

      Chili Stuffed Enchilada Casserole

There is nothing complex with this recipe.  It’s another quick and easy one.  It only takes four ingredients and yes, you CAN freeze this recipe too!crock pot chili recipes

Just spray a baking dish, spoon some crockpot chili into a tortilla and sprinkle it liberally with shredded cheddar.  Roll it up and push it to one end of your baking dish.

Do this to all the tortillas until you’re out of supplies or your dish is full.  Pour the enchilada sauce over the top and bake @ 350 degrees for about 30 minutes.

      Here are the ingredients:

      • 6 to 8 tortillas, corn or flour (your choice)
      • 3 to 4 cups leftover slow cooker chili
      • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
      • 1 large can enchilada sauce

      Chili Cheese Dogs

These are one of my childish favorites.  I’m not ashamed to say so.  I love, love, love me some chili dogs.  Sonic made it worse recently when their new Bacon Triple Cheesy Cheddar Dog .  Childish? Maybe.  Delicious?  Absolutely.

crock pot beef chili cheese dogscrock pot beef chili cheese dogs

Sadly, there is NO Sonic where I live.  Well, there is but it’s 50 miles away.  So I learned to make my own.  It isn’t a copycat but it’s yummy.  It also works with this crockpot chili amazingly well.

      • All you need is hot dog buns. Potato buns if you can find them.  If not, the regular hot dog buns work.  Like I said this isn’t a copycat recipe.  It’s just close.
      • Add a couple kinds of shredded or sliced cheddar cheeses
      • Add mustard if you like.  I do, 'cause I like!

      Chili Cheese Topped Baked Potatoes

Here’s another super easy leftover chili idea… Baked potatoes.  You can make baked potatoes in the crockpot.  That’s another super duper easy thing to do.  Just grease the crockpot, scrub the potatoes and toss them in with a just a little water.  Cover and cook those babies all day or even overnight if they are huge.slow cooker chili ground beef and potatoesslow cooker chili ground beef and potatoes

Some folks like to wrap them in foil.  I don’t.  I’m moving away from using foil.  It’s a personal choice, you can do it either way.

      Chili Con Carne Tacos

Another amazingly simple option.  Fill your taco shells with chili and add your toppings of choice.

crock pot beef chili tacoscrock pot beef chili tacos

We usually add sour cream, homemade queso, and sour cream.  But anything you can think of works with this recipe.  Use your imagination.

      Chili Mac Casserole

Here’s another “toss and go” recipe.  It just takes a couple minutes if you have precooked pasta.  Add how much ever chili you want and a little extra chili powder to fit your taste...

best slow cooker chili macbest slow cooker chili macAdd the toppings of your choice or nothing at all and you’ve got supper all done.  Pst…You can make this on the stove, in the oven or toss it in the crockpot for a couple hours.  It works any way you decide to make it.

      Chili-Cheese Fries

This one’s another childhood favorite of mine :)  Make up a batch of fries, any kind and anyway you prefer. crockpot chili cheese friescrockpot chili cheese fries

Top them with chili and cheese and if you’re in a wild mood…add some bacon too!  This makes a great snack anytime, but it’s perfect for movie night munchies.

      Chili Burritos

These burritos are another super easy weeknight meal idea.  It’s simply chili with cheese melted in it.  This is from a different batch of chili but the principle is the same.

It’s simply chili with cheese melted in it.  This is from a different batch of chili but the principle is the same.  I also didn’t measure the ingredients for these.  It was about three-quarters chili and one-quarter shredded cheeses.crockpot chili burritoscrockpot chili burritos

I tossed it all in the crockpot and let it melt a couple hours, wrapped up the burritos and baked them for about 20 minutes at 350 degrees.

Also, if you want something to brown well, just brush the tops with a little butter.  The browning part makes it a little prettier but the real benefit is taste.  Just a little brush of butter lets it crisp up and adds LOTS of flavor.  You don’t have to.  It just adds a little bit of "extra".  You really don’t even have to bake them if you’re in a rush.  Your choice.

So there you have it!  Deliciously simple slow cooker chili, an easy chili seasoning recipe and nine ways to enjoy it!

Any sort of shrimp works for this recipe. It can be frozen, peeled or cooked. Just about any sort works. The kicker is what kind of shrimp you use makes a difference on both when you toss it in the crock pot AND how long it cooks. Size, fresh, frozen and with or without the shell all make your recipe instructions different. No worries! Just read through the directions up top in the post and watch for the shrimp to look pink. Pink is the key. Grey isn't cooked, white is over cooked. Just pay a little attention to the shrimp, make sure your taters are cooked and it'll be awesome.

      Slow Cooker Cooking for Fur-Babies!

If you consider your furbaby is part of your family, feeding them well is part of your mission.  Many of the premium dog foods are excellent and we feed them, but adding a little extra for nutrition and "spoils" is always fun.  Thus, crock pot dog food is something that's usually cooked and added to our regular purchased foods.

There are lots of calculations and considerations that go into feeding just homemade dog food.  I never have personally.  Not because I didn't want to, simply because up 'til the last few years, we've been feeding 4 to 6 large dogs, for the last couple decades.  To feed that many pounds of dog homemade dog food would take a crockpot going 4 days a week.  So we opted to feed half commercial top-shelf and half homemade.

My Reasons for Making Slow Cooker Dog Food: Casey, Clyde, Connor, Jackson & Chance

Sadly, I only have one fur-baby remaining.  Her name is Casey.  She's a 15-year-old Aussie with lots and lots of allergies.  She's been through multiple surgeries, survived cancer and a horrible bout with sarcoptic mange as a puppy.  Those allergies are why my poor girl will never grow hair around her eyes.  She's also mostly blind.  That's why her eyes reflect so badly.  But she took the picture for me so I was happy :)

      Casey Jones

After everything she's been through, I'm just glad she's still around.  And I want to keep her that way as long as possible.  So she gets half top shelf dog food, half homemade crock pot dog food, a daily multivitamin, and supplements to help with her allergies and joints.

Should You Use Vitamins & Supplements?

Our dogs have also received supplements for years.  Both a daily vitamin and joint supplements as they age.  Casey gets vitamins that help with her allergies too.  There are an amazing array of dog vitamins and supplements you can use to help you furbaby.  It's always worth looking into.If you decide to feed your pup straight homemade dog food, either using this crock pot dog food recipe or any other, please give them a daily supplement to go with it.  There are lots of vitamins and trace minerals all dogs need.  Those vary by age, weight and activity level too.  It is possible to get all the nutrients your dog needs in his homemade dog food, but it's difficult and time-consuming.  Adding a daily multivitamin can greatly increase your pup's life expectancy and ease a lot of worry for you too.

If you decide to feed your pup straight homemade dog food, either using this crock pot dog food recipe or any other, a supplemental multivitamin becomes all the more important.

      Homemade Dog Food Calorie Calculations

Calculating for caloric needs, vitamins, nutrient ratios, and blah, blah...it all gets rather intense and complicated.  I google "basic dog requirements for homemade dog food" years ago when one of my other fur-babies was diagnosed with cancer.  Sadly, his cancer was too progressed and we weren't able to save him.  I did learn a lot about feeding dogs with ailments in the process, though.

Crock Pot Dog Food Calorie Needs

Sorry it's blurry, I don't have rights to modify it :(

I researched.  And researched.  And researched some more.  This chart from OSU.edu is a basic calorie requirement graph.  It's decently easy to understand compared to a lot of others I found.  Basically, as you dog is more active, he needs more calories (that includes pregnant, lactating and working dogs double and triple).  As their weight and/or size increases, their caloric needs too.

This chart doesn't discuss what you should be feeding though.  Dog's need "x" amount of protein.  "X" depends again on activity, age, etc.

Almost all the sites I researched say 25 to 28% protein at a minimum.  Some say half your protein should be from meat and the other from another source like yogurt or eggs.  Some sites reference no grains, others say it's mandatory.

If your dog is obese, breeding or ill, there are many more factors and dietary requirements to be considered as well.  OSU recommends using this calculator by Balance IT to find an optimal mix.

And their calculator is awesome too!  I just LOVE it.  BUT don't always have time to use it so here's a quick run-down.  Basically, and I DO mean basic...normal, healthy dogs need:

      • 30 to 40% Protein
      • 18 to 24% Fat
      • Vitamins & Minerals
      • Omega Fatty Acids

I'm not guessing about those figures.  It took a lot of research.  But, I'm also not a certified for anything with dogs.  I've just been raising and loving them for a couple decades and I'm passionate about the subject.

Again, if your dog isn't healthy, has skin allergies (like my Casey), doesn't have much energy or is needing to lose weight...those are all factors to consider.  The calculator at Balance IT covers those conditions and lots of others too.

High Iron Crock Pot Dog Food Recipe

This is the first of MANY crock pot dog food recipes I have.  I'll add more to the list as I'm able.  This one is super high in iron and every critter, that includes the cat, that's eaten it LOVES it!  It isn't made for the cat, though.

Cats do not need grains.  Their nutritional needs are a LOT different than dogs (You can check that out using that same calculator I mentioned above).

      slow cooker dog food

This cat just happens to steal food from the mostly blind dog when she isn't looking.

      Word of Warning

One quick word of warning.  This crock pot dog food...or any cooked homemade dog food... looks absolutely nasty once it's cooked.  It just looks plain gross!

      Crock Pot Dog Food

As long as you can get past the icky looking results...be happy!  This stuff is great for your pup.  Again, it's high iron.  The only meat source for this recipe is beef liver.  Dogs should not be fed this all the time.  It's really too much iron for an everyday meal.  BUT it's great if your pup is under the weather and needs an extra boost.

You probably won't need all the recipe.  Just freeze it in quantity size baggies and get some out when you do.  They can have this particular recipe a couple times a week even if they aren't ill, just not all the time.

High Iron Crock Pot Dog Food Ingredients

      slow cooker dog food recipe

      You'll need:

      • 2 pounds beef liver
      • 1 cup brown rice
      • 2 cups broccoli
      • 2 cups carrots
      • 3 cups water
      • 1 cup greek yogurt
      • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
      • 4 eggs

      Crockpot Dog Food Directions

      Crockpot Dog Food

Toss in the meat, veggies and rice.  Cover and cook it all day or overnight.

Fyi...the liver stinks a bit cooking but it's soooo worth how excited they are to smell it and know its for them :)

Serving & Freezing Your Homemade Crock Pot Dog Food

Now you can proceed a couple different ways.  You can add the eggs, oil and yogurt now or you can wait and add them when you're ready to serve it.

You can freeze it all mixed up and ready to serve.  It will separate a bit a look odd.  But your pup isn't going to care.  It doesn't mess with the nutritional value either.  So freeze it if you like, it really doesn't matter.

Figuring out how much of your creation to feed your critters is pretty easy.

      1. Check out the chart above by OSU.edu for your dog's caloric needs

Pork chops in the crock pot don't always turn out great.  I've honestly never tried to make them this way.  I KNEW from previous experience I wasn't a fan of just tossing them in the crock with a "cream of something" soup.

Don't get me wrong.  I don't have any issues with using any sort of cream soups.  Some folks do, I don't.  I think it's a personal choice.  And I personally believe the cream soups have their place...just not with pork chops (for me).

      Crockpot Porkchops

So anyways, these are breaded and fried for just a couple minutes.  They fry for about the amount of time it takes to wash your veggies and mix up the gravy mix (see that detail below).

All in all this pork chop crock pot recipe is the BEST I've eaten OR made.  I hope you like it.  Give us a shout on the Facebook page and tell us about it.

Psstt...It looks like a lot of steps.  It isn't.   but that's just 'cause if you do it step by step like I write it...it takes 9 to 12 minutes...so I figured a few more seconds to read it would save lots of time down the road :)

I used Panko bread crumbs.  They don't make a smooth gravy.  It's yummy, but not smooth.  If you want a smooth gravy, substitute flour instead.

Depending on the size and shape of your crockpot, you might need to make two layers.  In a large, oval crockpot you'll be able to do it in one layer.  I used a 4 quart, round crock pot and I had to do two layers.

Fresh Green Beans Straight From the Garden Rock This Recipe...

Fresh beans are awesome.  They are crunchy, crisp and come in a wide variety of shapes and textures.  The ones used for this slow cooker green beans recipe are called "Kentucky Wonders".  And they are yummy!

It doesn't matter if you grow your own, though.  You can pick them up at the farmer's markets easily enough.  Some grocery stores carry fresh green beans year around now too.  So there are lots of options.

If fresh isn't an option you can always use frozen, or even canned.  Your looks and texture are gonna change but big deal.  It's all about taste (or mostly).

Ingredients for slow cooker green beans

      crockpot green beans

      For this recipe I used:

      • 2 pounds fresh green beans (about, I didn't weigh them)
      • 3 cloves of crushed garlic
      • 3 large red potatoes
      • 1 large yellow onion
      • 1 packet of uncured, real bacon bits (not pictured above)
      • 2 teaspoons of beef flavored Better Than Bouillon

Your Ingredients Are Optional & Interchangeable Too

      crockpot green beans

What do I mean by interchangeable? Easy, you can substitute stuff as you please.

If you don't use bacon bits, fry up and use cooked and crumbled bacon.  If you don't like bouillon (though this brand has less sodium and calories than broth) then use broth.  Don't have any red potatoes on hand?  No worries, use russets.  Think onions are gross?  Don't use them...green beans and bacon

Just go with the flow.  Cooking is really just a little of science with a lot of art tossed in.  Throw it all in the slow cooker, stir it up and cook it all day.  You'll probably come up with something yummy everyone loves.

Too Tough for the Crockpot? Absolutely not! This Cube Steak & Gravy is One Delicious Meal!

Lots of folks know that the cheaper cuts of meat are awesome cooked in the crockpot.  This crock pot cube steak & gravy is absolutely NO exception to that rule.  It's creamy and delicious and very tender too!

      Crock Pot Cube Steak Gravy

The rice for this recipe was made in a separate crockpot and you can check that out here.  That isn't necessary of course but it IS very easy to do.  You can make plain rice or seasoned rice either one.  Then you can freeze it too!  Again, you can check it out here.

You might want to thicken up the gravy after it's done.  I will only take about 2 minutes to do it too.  I thought I was going to have to "cover and cook: an additional "x" minutes.  Nope.

      Crockpot Steak and Gravy

      Before adding thickener...

I added 2 tablespoons of cornstarch (non-GMO btw) to a quarter cup of cold water and stirred it for about 30 seconds.  It thickened without being cooked anymore.  Woohoo!

      Crock Pot Cube Steak Gravy

      After adding the thickener...

Important Note: When you do the layers...down the post a bit...you have to make sure the steaks are in a SINGLE layer.  If you just toss them in the crockpot in a blob they will also come out in a blob.  It's really sorta gross.  Been there and done it.  So just FYI there.

Also, if you salt, pepper and garlic the meat as suggested in the recipe below...go easy.  You can overdo it and then there's no going back.  You can always add more if needed.
